The club was founded in 1949 to provide organised cricket for pupils, former pupils and staff of Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, as an extension to the Old Challoners Association. Old Challoner’s Football Club had been founded much earlier in the 1920’s. It was the brainchild of the then headmaster, Mr R Simm, BA - affectionately known as ‘Simmy’. He became the inspiration and guiding force behind the O.C.C.C. It was he who encouraged a group of enthusiastic players to set up the club and it was he who, naturally, became its first Chairman - a position he was rightfully to hold from 1949 through to the mid-1970’s when he became the club President.
Old Challoner’s Cricket Club formally started on January 24th, 1949 and played its first game on May 14th the same year, losing heavily to the School. The annual reunion game against Dr Challoner’s Grammar School has been a highlight and an eagerly anticipated match ever since.
Statistics for that first season showed 15 games played, with 8 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw.
The Club has continued to flourish ever since although in the early 1980's, in an effort to attract more players, Old Challoner’s became an open club. This means that the club welcomes members from all parts of the community, regardless of age, gender, disability, race, ethnic origin, creed, colour, social status and sexual orientation.
In 2003, OCCC took the momentous decision to modernise its whole approach and image and move with the times. The first part of a complete re-structuring of the club came by changing its name. From season 2004 it has been known simply as “Challoner’s Cricket Club”, hopefully a more attractive name to young cricketers! However, the club intends to remain faithful to its long standing traditions and values, providing opportunities to play cricket for anyone interested in the game, in a sportsmanlike and sociable atmosphere.
The links with Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, forged over many years, are now stronger than ever, with a thriving Junior Section based at the School (but of course open to all). We are also working with junior school children in conjunction with St Mary’s C of E Aided Combined School in Old Amersham.
The club has played in the Kookaburra Mid Bucks Cricket League since 2004 and a Sunday team, playing friendly matches, is being developed this year. We are also working towards “Clubmark” accreditation (basically a “kitemark” for clubs) by the end of this year.
These are exciting times for the club: please come and join us!
